Max was so blessed on Christmas....

Everyone...including Santa was very generous to Max this Christmas.  I was overwhelmed by the many wonderful gifts we received for Max.  He got lots of neat toys, ornaments and keepsakes.

For the first time since we have lived in our house Santa paid us a visit!

Both of us took turns opening Santa's gifts and took pictures of everything for Max.  Here are a few...

Mommy with some cars...

Daddy with a Helicopter...

All of Santa's gifts...

Sorry some of the pictures are fuzzy...

I-600 Approved!!!! (this is a good thing)

We got the letter today that our I-600 was approved on 12-22-2010.  Which is the United States side of the paperwork, the timeframe on this document is all over the board anywhere from 1 week to 16 weeks.  We waited a little over 4 weeks once we were logged into the system, which is not so bad.  We were also supposed to be re-fingerprinted since our prints expire on 1-2-11.  So I think we do not have to go back again.   There is one more document that we need in order to get the US side 100% done and we are thinking it may already be done.  This will mean that we will be only waiting on the Korea documents.  We are certainly relieved to have this step done.  Remember to follow the timeline on the side to see what we have left...the list is getting shorter!

Our Christmas was wonderful and I will post some pics and tell you all about it later this week.  This was one of the best gifts we got for Christmas....the gifts just keep coming!

Special Christmas Ornament for Max

A few weeks ago I was shopping at T*rget...looking at the ornaments.  There were a few cute "Baby's First Christmas" ornaments.  I was conflicted.  Yes, it is Max's first Christmas.  But he is not home with us.

I posted a question on my adoption message board looking for advice and what others in this same situation have done.  I got lots of responses, mostly others  thought that I should buy one this year and one next year.

Shortly after this I got a message from another Adoptive Mom, Misty.  She wanted to make an ornament for Max!  She was already making one for her daughter that is waiting to come home and offered to make one for Max.  I gladly accepted her offer and sent her our address.  About a week later there was a big envelope in my mailbox, a very beautiful ornament with Max's picture on it.  I did not know what to expect...but it surpassed my expectations.  It was a wonderful gift, at a time of the year I am finding difficult to get through.

Here is a photo of the ornament on our tree: ( the picture does not do it justice)

It says:

Born in Our Hearts Our Blessing Max
Waiting for us in Korea 2010.

What a wonderful gift from one waiting momma to another.  The Friends I have met during this journey have helped me in so many ways.  I am truely thankful for the blessings of this support system!  Thank you Misty!

New pictures of Max!! and a medical update!

On  Thursday we received two new pictures of Max!

The first is a picture of him with his foster mother and the care package items we sent him.  It is a wonderful yet strange feeling to see your son half way around the world wearing an outfit you picked out for him and send him in the mail.  We had to block out his foster mothers face for privacy reasons, but let me tell you she has the biggest smile on her face.  He is most definitely being well taken care of :)

The other is a picture that was  taken the same day, He had hand surgery (they often send pictures with new medical information)  As many of you know, he was born with an extra thumb on his right hand.  He has surgery to remove the extra thumb on November 23rd.  These pictures were from November 26th.  We did not know he was going to have surgery.  It was just as well that we did not know beforehand, I would have worried for weeks.  His eyes are just as bright and he looks to be doing well.

These new photos made our week Month! I was certainly having a hard time believing it was all real.  This was just what I needed to carry on!

Max is now 8 months old and he currently weighs 17.41 pounds up just a little from last month and is 27.28 inches, he also has 3 new teeth on top! for a total of 5, 2 of them are his bottom teeth.  he can stand on his own, crawl and walk along the furniture!  Wow things are just passing us by.  We will definitely have to chase him by the time we bring him home.  He had gained almost 2 pounds last month and I was a little worried he would be a BIG baby by the time he comes home.  He is a healthy, happy growing boy! We cannot wait to bring this little guy home!!! So far 2 months waiting, hopefully only 3 or 4 to go, we shall see.

All sunshine and LOTS of Showers...

It's not a weather report...Two weeks ago we were very lucky to have several people throw us Baby Showers!  We had two in just a few days.

The First:

Mark's Co-workers threw us a shower on Monday 11-8 during our lunch break.  We only work a few minutes from each other, I was invited to join everyone for the shower and they served lunch and had a beautiful cake.  We were blessed with many gifts from some individuals and some gifts from the group.

Here are some pictures from the shower and the gifts we received.  Everyone was very generous and we are very thankful for their kindness.

The Second Shower:   My Mom and Sisters threw me a Shower on Saturday 11-13.

It was a lot of family and several of my friends as well.  We had an early dinner, were definitely showered with many wonderful gifts and some very tasty cake! We do typically not play games at showers, we are more of a chatting and drinking wine kind of group.  I did have one request...we passed out blank world maps and itty bitty pictures of Max.  It was a one question game "Where in the world is Max?"  Everyone had to put his picture where they thought he was.  Everyone seemed to know he was in South Korea, and most everyone got the continent right.  My niece Megan went around and showed everyone where it was!  She had done her homework and had a bit of an advantage;)

Part of the decorations were little Korean Flags.  I had to get a picture with both the South Korean and American Flags.

Here are some pictures from the Shower as well.  We got gifts from near and far.  I even got a surprise package from another AP in waiting Amy!  Thank you, Amy.  When I explained how I knew her, from meeting online, no one seemed to follow, so I said it is kind of like online dating for adoptive moms!

We were very blessed by the generousity of both of these groups and are very thankful we have them in our lives!  Thank you everyone for the wonderful things for Max! We cannot wait until he is able to use everything!

Legals!

We found out yesterday that our legals arrived in Wisconsin on Friday November 12th.  The state will send the legals and a letter to the Federal government and we will start the steps to be able to bring home Max.  The US side is officially underway!

Care Package sent to Max.

On Friday we mailed our care package to Max.  When I went to the post office to get the box to send it in the lady kept telling me they did NOT ship to Korea, Period.  We went several rounds of...this is going to South Korea, NOT North Korea.  She still did not believe me and kept looking in their database...I of course did not have the address with me, I was just picking up the box.  Then she found something in he database that said we could mail drop it to the country.  Which means to put it in a big bag with a bunch of other peoples packages and they throw it out of a plane.  This option was going to cost several hundred dollars.  Ummmm, no, we would not be doing this.  The she found 2 different Korea entries, but it did not differentiate North or South, she kept interchanging Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (North) and Republic of Korea (South) and telling me we could send it to the North but not South and asked if I wanted to do that instead, Huh...no I don't want to send it to North Korea.  Finally, I told her I would check the website when I got home and if it says I can send it to South Korea, I would come back with the address.  Well just in case you were wondering...we can ship a package to South Korea!  Thank goodness, because we had some cute things to send to Max!

We sent some outfits, PJ's, a blanket, toy, mittens, pictures, a book with our voices reading it and a baby toothbrush (kind of a teether with a toothbrush on the end)  since he has 2 teeth at 7 months! We also sent some candy corn and kitchen towels for the foster family.

The mittens we sent, I actually made them!  I did not knit them, I sewed them.  One of the first things I actually completed with my developing sewing skills.  I actually made them from some fleece I had bought for another project and used one of Mark's old shirts for the fabric for the cuffs!

They are not perfect, but they were made with love for my Son! Not bad for a beginner.

The package should make it there in 5 to 10 business days and he should get it when he goes in the last week of November for his monthly well baby check.  Many times adoptive parents get new photos of their children with the contents of the care package, sometimes they are photographed with their foster mothers.  This would be a precious picture to have.  If we get new picture we will share them with everyone.

Timeline added...

If you would like to follow along as we check steps off of the list to bring home Max, I started the timeline on the side.  As we get things completed ( if we know they have been completed we will mark the dates they were done)  Once all of the steps are done, We will get our travel call, which means Max is ready to come home and we have 7-10 days to get to Korea and bring home our son!  We will be there 5 to 7 days depending on the timeframe we have and will bring him home.  We only have to go to Korea once and we will come home with him then.  We have been told that it will take about 4 to 5 months for all of the paperwork to be complete, we expect to travel sometime in February.  But it could be sooner...or it could be later.  There is no "due date" with adoption.

"You're not supposed to buy baby clothes...you'll get gifts!"

I have heard this from several people, and practically scolded.  The first time, I was like, yes but I have been WAITING to be able to finally buy clothes for MY baby for years!  It is not as if we will spend a ton of money or that we need alot.  We got 17 garbage bags FULL of clothes from my sister that my nephew has grown out of.  Some were too small, but there are still lots and lots (thanks A) Max will get a ton of use out of.  I am totally grateful for these clothes my nephew wore and any gifts we will get...but what is wrong with wanting to buy a few things that we I like and picked out ourselves myself?

Am I completely out of line here? The way I see it is, this is the fun part!  Why should only other people get to do the fun part?!?

Coincidence? I think not.

There are several reasons why we believe Max was matched with our family.  So many reasons in fact, one might think it was meant to be...

  • Max was born on March 31, 2010.  Mark's brother and his late Grandmother also share a March 31st Birthday!
  • Months ago, I told several family members that I was going to predict when our child had been born, I stood in my Kitchen and told my Mother in Law, Mark's Aunt and Mark that I was "calling it" that our child was born on the day my Grandmother died....I was really close, he was being born in Korea when we were at my Grandmothers funeral.  I would like to think she told him he would like us!
  • Mark's birthday is February 20th, mine is May 9th.  March 31st is exactly 39 days after Mark's Birthday and 39 days before mine! (except when it is a leap year!)
I think it was fate that we were chosen to be our little boy's parents.  I hope he has a few grandma angels in heaven watching over him and helping him and us on the rest of this journey to become a family.

The rest of the story...

Of course, the call we have been waiting years for, I missed it.  After making sure my social worker has all of my numbers correct and letting her know she can call me at work, and checking my cell phone all of the time...I missed the call.

The morning of "the call"  I was working in the office, I had started to work from home, though Mondays are my in the office day.  At 9:15 the power went out and they thought it would take until noon to come back up.  Mark and I had car pooled that day and we have a 40 minute commute one way.  I could not reach him on his cell or at work.  Some of my coworkers suggested that we go for brunch somewhere, so we all left the office and went to a nearby place.  After we got our orders and we were done, excused myself to go to the bathroom.  I checked my phone, there was a text from the office manager that the power was back on and a missed call from our Social Worker...20 minutes before, I apparently had not heard my phone ring.  I ran outside and called her back.  She was on the phone with someone else, I asked to be put on hold, the person who answered said...I will see how long she will be...I blurted out my name and said "tell her it's me!"  She said "excuse me?"  I was worried I sounded rude, and just said I am returning her call she is expecting me to call back...I wasn't sure I didnt even bother to listen to the voice mail she left!

I waited on hold for what seemed like 20 minutes...it was more like 2.  I paced and paced and paced she came on the line and said..."you've been matched!"  I almost passed out...immediately started to cry and I am not sure what I said, she told me she should have asked if I was sitting down.  I said "But I wasn't!!"

I called Mark right away, he was shocked to say the least.

A call you wait years for and we were both surprised...at some point your mind doesn't let you beleive it will actually happen.  I am so glad it did!  It is slowly sinking in that this is real and we cannot wait to bring Max home to his forever family.

It's a Boy!!!

We are thrilled to announce that on Monday we received our long awaited phone call.  We had been matched with a beautiful baby boy.  He was born on Wednesday March 31st.  We plan to name him Max.  We signed the acceptance paperwork this afternoon, we are on our way to bringing home our son.  We should be able to travel to Korea by some time in February.

We have been busy...

The break from blogging has been theraputic and we have managed to keep busy.  Here are some highlights:

  • We went camping in Door County, our favorite place in Wisconsin.  We actually ran into a family I recognized from their blog who just adopted their son Kellan from Korea, Jen was not there but I was able to meet the rest of her family.  Maybe next time Jen :)
  • We have been both playing fantasy football.  I have not been doing too hot.  But hopefully today the tides will turn.
  • I bought a sewing machine and lots of fabric and patterns...but have not yet made a thing.  I am a bit nervous to start, but maybe soon.
  • I signed up for a knitting class that will start in 2 weeks.  I am looking forward to trying some new crafts.  I always have good ideas, but have trouble executing them.  But I have to start somewhere.
  • Fall is by far my favorite season, I love the smell of the leaves and the colors of the trees changing.  We went to a fall festival today and we got some cute Halloween decorations and enjoyed the sunshine.  It has been in the 60's and I love it.  I am definitely a jeans and sweatshirt kind of girl!
We have been praying for some sort of movement on the adoption front, I have been trying very hard to sit back and enjoy life and see what happens. We are trying to be patient, having lots of projects to do to keep me busy helps otherwise this would be a very long winter.  Fingers crossed for some news soon!

Taking a break...

Taking a break from the blog, the adoption "excitement" or nausea, in some cases.  I'll be back eventually.  Need to focus on something else for a while...until next time.

Desperate times call for Desperate measures...

This weekend I joined a Fantasy Football team for the first time.  I figured if Mark has a team it keeps him occupied on the fall and winter weekends.  I am usually bored unless the Packers are playing.

What better way to be invested in what is going on, so if you can't beat them join them!   I decided whether we were still waiting for a referral or waiting to travel I would need a weekend distraction, especially once it starts to get cold outside.  Mark only had one "rule" that we had to be in separate leagues and can't play against each other, that would be too hard for us to do and not argue!

I am still trying to think of the perfect team name, that sounds tough but doesn't give me away as a girl.  Right now I am called "SK Omma", (South Korea Omma is Momma in Korean) If anyone has any better ideas please help me.

Is THIS our week to see our baby's face for the first time?

A year ago this week ( July 29th), I saw a beautiful picture for the first time... it was my very first ultrasound and I saw the heartbeat of our baby.

I was so relieved to see this but aprehensive all the same.  I had  to go to the appointment alone, Mark was out of town. I called him after my appointment and told him everything appeared to be okay.

Eight days later...We both went to my next appointment, my doctor wanted to do another ultrasound.  I was excited to have Mark see the heartbeat too.  Only this time...there was no heartbeat.    Thank God, Mark was there or I may still be curled up in a corner at the doctors office crying.

This pregnancy had come as a surprise (we couldn't get this to happen on purpose!), we had sent our homestudy to Korea in May, In July we found out we were expecting.  I was really emotional, scared, confused, worried.  I knew too much about the risks to be really happy, even when I told my mother, I cried, mostly because I was scared and could not be happy or believe it was happening.  I asked God a lot of questions at the time, why now?  I was in a good place, and really excited to begin our adoption journey.  I still ask, why did it happen at all? if it was just going to be horrible news.  I heard "everything happens for a reason" waaaay too many times.  No one ever says that when something good happens, wonder why that is?

I try to think that as part of god's plan, he got confused as to where my baby was supposed to be...whoops, not here...but in Korea.

The real question is, will God show us our baby's picture for the first time again this week? I really hope so, I promise I will say...everything happens for a reason!

Adoption 101: Starting from the beginning

Many of you know we are currently waiting for our referral of a baby from South Korea, some of you might not know what it took to get here:  I will go through the steps up until this point (this is all from memory, so may not be exact)...the rest of the process will come at a later date after we get our referral!

Initial Application: Done 11-2008
Agency informational meeting: Attended 12-2008
"Official" application: Done 12-2008 ( Had to clarify some medical information etc.)
Await acceptance from the program.
Begin Home study Process: February 2009...this entails the following
  • Physicals from our family doctor
  • Drug Tests
  • Blood test for various conditions or diseases
  • Letter from physician for each of us that we will make a fit parent. (due to really old medical stuff from childhood)
  • Complete a contract with the agency
  • Background checks done with our city, county, state and federal level for every where we have lived since we were 18 years old.
  • Fill out lots of paperwork, including answering very invasive personal questions.
  • Changed from the China program to the Korea program, ****(perhaps I will expand on this later, a sign from God was involved)
  • Complete our foster care license and CPR and first aid requirements.
  • Gave the agencies 5 names for personal references. ( Giving those close to us the uncomfortable task of telling the agency why we would be good parents and why we would not be good parents!)
  •  Collect letter from our employers verifying employment and health insurance.
  • Collect all of our tax records, financial statements, car titles, and any other assets or liabilities we might have.
  • Meet with the Social Worker 4 times once together at her office, once separately for each of us at her office and our actual home study visit at our home.
  • Our home study was off to Korea on 5-11-2009!
  • Completed our Immigration forms that allow us to bring a child from another country, including fingerprinting at the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Updated Homestudy ( for US purposes it expires after 1 year)
  • Began our Reading and education for inter country adoption, 18 hours or more is required. (our last class is Saturday!)
I think I covered it all.  If not, I think you will get the picture.  It is a laundry list for sure, but all necessary steps to bring our child home and it will be worth it in the end.

Until then...the wait continues. As of today 1 year 2 months 1 week and 1 day...It's time to get that phone call, I don't know how much more I can handle.

What you may not know about adoption...

If you have not adopted or do not know many who have adopted you may not know how an adoption works.  There are many steps that need to be taken before and after the child arrives home.

When someone announces that they are expecting a baby most people know how that goes...nine months, big belly, due date, ultrasounds, delivery, drugs or no drugs etc.

When you announce that you are adopting, most people do not know what that all entails, they see a baby coming to your house...but don't know how that happens or what steps must be taken after.

While I do not have all of the answers, I will try to do several posts to address some of the unique things about the adoption process, Korean adoption and other various issues as it relates to successful bonding and attachment.

I have a few ideas of what I want everyone to know, but am open to any questions or suggestions that anyone might have, or what they might want to know more about...please don't assume anything, questions are great, just leave a comment.

You've got the magic touch...or something like that.

In the past few years I have been told by various people as I am holding a baby.

You have the magic touch...
You're the baby wisperer...
Wow they're asleep already?...
She doesn't like anyone but me, but likes you alot...
You look natural holding a baby...

I usually respond with...Yes, another one of my useless talents.  This conversation occured again yesterday, for the first time, I did say this was a useless talent, but followed it up with...But not for long!

I just hope my magic does not wear off before it is my turn to be a mom ;)

A little get away

We celebrated our 6th Wedding Anniversary last Friday. We went away for a long weekend in Door County WI for a little rest, relaxation and escape from the day to day. I am amazed at how fast the last 6 years went, I keep telling myself the next 6 months will go just as fast!

The picture of us that we added to the blog is us in front of our favorite restaurant on our Anniversary, I am getting pretty good at taking pictures of us by just turning the camera around blind.

We had a nice time and got to stop at many of our favorite spots while we were there. I was happy to find a few adoption books in some of the shops. We got a cute one about what an adopted child does when she has to tell her life story as a class project. There is a very positive message at the end.

Even though we were escaping it all, our child remained in the forefront of our minds, even though we have yet to see his or her face for the first time.  The rest was nice and helped to focus on the important things in life.

Rummage Sale Success!

The adoption fund raiser rummage sale was very successful!  We met and exceeded our goal to put toward our adoption expenses, we had signs out that said all proceeds would go toward our international adoption. All of the folks that came through were nice, and several told us to keep the change from their purchases, we wish to thank them very much!  We had many people ask about our adoption and had all positive comments.  We even met another adoptive mom from our church who has adopted 2 girls from China.  We chatted for a while and exchanged numbers.  We were glad she stopped by, we had seen  their family at church  many times, but were too shy to approach them.

We also wish to thank both sets of parents who helped us work the sale.   It was nice to see a few other family and friends come through as well.  A weather forcast that called for rain both days held off for the most part and we had plenty of people come out and help us accomplish what we set out to do.  We even got our garage put back together!

Now we will be able to relax and enjoy our 6th Wedding anniversary next week!

A few pictures are below.

New outlook....again

The emotions with the adoption process are cyclical.  Many highs and lows, very painful and joyous.  It has been easy to encourage others on this journey, and we appreciate all of the return encouragement.  The difficult part is taking your own advice!

Again, I am going to try to take my own advice and keep my head up, live my own life and not wish my days away.  I still have to LIVE while we wait, or what kind of mother will I be??

The positives in my life (that my sisters kindly reminded me of, I sure they want to shake me!):

- Happily married
- Safe and secure
- We are both employed (finally)
- We WILL have a child eventually
- We have the time to enjoy our time just being the two of us, until we bring our child home.
- We get to plan for a trip and research our child's birth country of South Korea.
- I have the time to work on the best me possible; perhaps I should start with a good attitude:)

Our Basement is a Disaster Area

Next week we will hold a rummage to raise funds for our adoption expenses. About 6 months ago we asked close friends and family to give us things they would otherwise give to goodwill. You can see the results of this solicitation in the photographs. We got a very generous response.  Some went out of their way to meet us with things halfway between our home and theirs.  Others dropped things off at the house while we were at work.  We don't even know what's in some of these boxes yet!!

We wish to thank all those who donated stuff for the rummage.  It will be neat to show our child these pictures one day. He or she will be able to see the stuff we got to help bring him or her home.  Our child will know he or she was loved before anyone even knew who he or she was. We will post pictures of the rummage as well. It will run on Friday and Saturday June 4th – 5th.

We are looking forward to having several of our family and friends come through on this Memorial Day weekend to help us set up/organize for next week, and enjoy some grilling out. We are very grateful for all the veterans who paid the ultimate price so we could have it easy.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day Holiday!

When something "catches" you off guard

As a fisherman, Mark is used to waiting on something for a long time, sometimes without moving for what seems like an eternity, but when he gets "the" fish he is waiting on it all makes it worth it.

In a way our wait for our referral is the same way. Lots of waiting and it seems like time has stood still.
Sometimes the wait makes you feel uneasy or antsy.  I know what triggers my emotions and anxiety,
I know I need to have my guard up when I am going to be around a baby or see someone pregnant.  I am good at "dealing" with it.  We can't account for when something catches you by surprise when you aren't expecting it to.

On Saturday we took a walk near a lake after we had gone out for dinner.  There was a man and his son fishing, they had caught a fish, the dad went running back to the car for something, as he ran past us I noticed he was Asian, the little boy about 3 ( also Asian) yelled to us, "we got a big fishy!" and waved it around...still on the line.  We congratulated him and told him good job.

As we walked away we just looked at each other.  It hit me like a ton of bricks.  Mark loves fishing, and we have often talked about he and our son or daughter going fishing together.  The little Asian boy put me over the edge, I can be a good waiter sometimes and other times....not so much.

Project to keep us busy

We have been trying to keep busy as we wait, tackling or creating projects around the house.  After I was done painting the nursery I was looking for a new project.  When we were assessing what we needed for the nursery we were talking about whether or not we needed a changing table.  We were also trying to find a way to utilize a very old ugly beat up dresser we had, so we painted the dresser and will use it as a changing table! The drawers don't work very well, so we plan to put the next size clothes or extra sheets and stuff in it.  Here are before and after photos.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

We plan to add a changing pad, and a basket.  The colors are two from our safari bedding we got.

Our next project...THE RUMMAGE SALE...more on that later!

May 11...1 year waiting

Tomorrow marks the one year wait since our home study was sent to Korea.  I recently found out that May 11th is Adoption day in Korea.  It is a celebration to promote Korean domestic adoption.  I think this is just a little too ironic for me.

Honestly, our phone could ring at any time...we just don't know.  We have been trying to distract ourselves and do projects around the house.  We'll post more about this later...once I figure out how to post photos.

Until "the call" we will keep living life and looking forward.  Thanks everyone for all of your support.

What is a mother...depends on your perspective

With Mother's day just around the corner, it is a chance for all of us to honor our own mothers and thank them for all they have done (Thanks Mom!).

I never really thought about what defines a mother, I had my one mother who gave birth to me, case closed.  Mother Defined in the Dictionary is this:

Mother: A Female Parent (note, it says nothing about giving birth to be a real mom)

This is a quite simple definition for such a big job. It is not quite as simple as this, there are many types of mothers and many good mothers and not so good mothers.  There are Mother-in-laws, Step Mothers, Foster Mothers, Birth Mother's, Adoptive Mothers...the list goes on.

Many children are fortunate, like me, to have one Mother who gave birth to them and this is all they know.  With adoption I will be our child's 3rd Mother, all in their first year of life.

First Mother, Birth Mother: This will always be the woman who gave life to our child, a bond that can never be broken.  The selfless act of giving up their baby, for a myriad of reasons.  This is the most precious gift any one human being could ever give another.  Nothing is expected in return, but to take wonderful care of her baby!

Second Mother, Foster Mother:  This Mother will care for and love your child until they are ready to come to their forever family.  She is really the glue that keeps the child's life in check, helps them bond with others and begin to mold them.  There are Foster Mothers in Korea who have accepted babies into their home over and over again, just to have the babies leave their home after 10 months or more; you have to be a special kind of woman to be able to endure this pain repeatedly, though I think they are happy the children are going home with their forever family.

Third Mother, Adoptive Mother (that's me!): Adopted children have been thorough so much by the time they reach our home, we will do our best to heal the hurts and be a family, there is no other choice.  I am in this for the long haul.  I have definitely chosen to become a mother, and I cannot wait for the day I hold my baby for the first time.  I do not know the end of this story, I do know that I will appreciate being a mother and not take any bit of motherhood for granted.  I certainly don't feel like a mother yet, though my instincts are running high and I am very protective of my child, even though we don't know who he or she is yet.

I certainly look forward to having next Mother's Day take on a new meaning for me.

Thank you to ALL Mothers out there, young and old, new and seasoned, doing your best for your children to have a wonderful life!

Every year the day before Mother's Day is Birth Mother's Day, where Birth Mother's are honored.  I definitely plan on honoring her on this day and many other's throughout the year.

Happy Mother's Day!

Turning a new leaf...the positives of waiting

I decided I had to turn a new leaf...or no one would ever read this blog again.  I have to save the whining for when it really gets tough to wait.  For now, I will try to remain positive. Here are a few reasons why the wait can be positive.

* The longer we wait the more money we can save!
* The longer we wait the more vacation K earns for more paid time off.
* We can still sleep in...if you call 6:30 sleeping in.
* We can watch whatever we want on TV.

We will gladly give it all up for our child, the wait will be very much worth it.  A year from now (hopefully) we will not even remeber the wait and we won't know what we did with our time before we became parents.

A new week, a new attitude and a new prayer that we will be matched with our baby soon!

Waiting and waiting and waiting...It's not over yet.

We have been on this adoption journey for nearly 18 months, twice as long as most mothers wait to have a baby and there is no end in sight.  We are quickly approaching the 1 year since our Home Study was completed.  This is the date that most of the wait time is gauged on, our Home Study to Korea date is May, 11th 2009.  As this anniversary of sorts quickly approaches it is difficult to believe it has already been a year.  It is equally difficult to believe that one year from now chances are good that our empty room will be occupied, that there will be another place set at the table and we will be a family of three.

As much as we know we are not alone it is still becoming increasingly more difficult to wait.  We try to look at the big picture and see that we could get "the call" any time now telling us we have been matched. That is when the wait get's even harder....knowing that YOUR baby that you have waited so long for is half way around the world and you have to wait for all the red tape to be cleared away before you are able to hold them for the first time.  Adopting from South Korea is not near as frightening as some other countries have become recently.

CHINA- The wait time skyrocketed from 9 months to likely 4-7 years, it is estimated that 80% of families that sent their paperwork to China have backed out of the program and have chosen other countries, which also means additional fees for these families and starting the paperwork all over again.  We started in the China program and switched when we got an email that the South Korea program was looking for families, this was definitely our sign from God.

HAITI- A devistating earthquake in January left a country with an already high number of orphans with many more additional orphans and no government to process adoptions, because all of the government agencies were reduced to a pile of rubble.  The program is now CLOSED.

RUSSIA- One womans hasty, selfish, decision caused immeasurable pain to thousands of families in the process of adopting children from Russia.    The Russian Government immediately ceased all intercountry adoptions, with the hopes that they can come to some sort of agreement with the US.  At this time the program is now CLOSED.

There are statistics that show there are 147 MILLION orphans around the world.  Yet the number of hoops you must jump through and fees associated with adopting are beyond comprehension.  Medical and financial information must be surrendered, your home must be visited, you must have witnesses (not 1 but 3) vouch for you and indicate that you will be fit parents; (they must also indicate where you might be lacking in the parenting department), we sincerely thank the friends and family that were assigned the laborious task.  If all parents had to be put through the ringer in this manner before getting pregnant there would not be 147 Million orphans on this planet.

As we wait there are good days and bad, we have tried to not put our life on hold while we wait. However, some days are just tougher than others and we have to find a way to cope with them...one of the ways is blogging; We hope to have some good news to post soon.  Until then the wait continues.

For all the adoptive parents...young and old.

We have heard throughout the adoption process that you will never, ever forget certain days during this process, referral day, your travel call, the first time you meet your baby and family day (when you get to keep them forever).  We cannot wait to experience all of these wonderful days.

We have found that other adoptive parents going through this same process are the only people who truely understand how difficult the process can be.  They are  the only ones that really understand what you are going through.  All of our friends and family are very supportive and listen and help us through the tough times, but no one really knows it until you've lived it.

We recently spoke to an adoptive parent who shared her story with us and remembered the smallest details of her quest to become a mother.  Her story was full of detail and she talked about her 2 adoptions like it was yesterday, it was an especially wonderful story since it was my 98 year old Great Aunt! Her journey to adopt started more than 70 years ago.  This woman is amazing, and has been through a lot in her life.  When we approached her, she said that she thinks about us all of the time.  Apparently each time she spoke with my grandmother (her sister) she would ask about us, we never knew that she asked about us specifically.  She told us how she and her husband had to wait until the war was over before they were allowed to adopt.  This was because her husband was of military service age and the government would not want her to have to raise a child on her own.  She told us how she was married for 16 years before she finally became a mother.  In the late 1940's and early 1950's this was very uncommon for a woman to be married 16 years before having a family.  She told us details of her adoption and her journey that most of the family never knew.  This really does prove that it is one of those things you might not be able to relate to unless you have walked that road yourself.

Everyone's journey is different and special in their own way.   We are very excited to be making these memories and greatful for the connection we are making along the way.  Thank you, to all of our fellow adoptive parents who have made us feel as though we are not alone on this wonderful, yet often scary and perplexing process.

Many Questions

We made our annoucement that we were planning to adopt about 18 months ago.  Most everyone was excited for us and had many questions.  We are pretty open about how we made the decision to adopt  and how the process works.  We welcome questions even if someone thinks it is a goofy question.

If you have any questions about the process or were wondering about something, feel free to leave a comment or contact us directly and we will try to address them.  Most of this process is a mystery to most people, and we are certainly learning as we go.

There are many assumptions about the process, we would rather have questions asked that we can address than have anyone just assume something.

No Map For This Journey

We have all heard many times that everything happens for a reason.  Also, God has a plan for us but he just has not revealed it to us yet.

On this journey to adoption there have been many difficult choices, though we never made them until we were ready.  After many doctors visits (more than we care to remember) and the passage of a lot of time, in December of 2008 we made the decision to pursue international adoption.

At this point in our journey, we are waiting for our referral of a boy or girl from South Korea.  In a typical case we would expect to be matched with a child about 12-18 months after our home study was completed.  You can see how long we've waited a the top of this page.

We hope to chronicle the remainder of our adoption journey and beyond, we may post annoucements, thoughts, adoption information and things you may need to know. Thank you for following our journey.
